Easy Ways to Stop Your Home from Wasting Energy

In 2021, we simply cannot afford to waste any resources. Be it water or energy, wasting these resources ends up being much more expensive in the long run for our planet. However, as we are getting more eco-conscious, adopting a greener lifestyle becomes easier and more affordable every year. In fact, by upgrading your home and making it more energy-efficient, you can save quite a lot of money in the long term. In this article, we are going to share some ways how to save money and help our planet by making your home energy efficient.

1.    Patch Up the Windows

Windows and doors are often the main culprits in wasting energy. Instead of cooling and heating the outside, check your doors and windows for drafts by holding a candle (or an incense) stick around windows and doors. If the flame or smoke flicker, it’s likely your windows and doors have drafts. To fix them, consider replacing caulking and/or installing weatherstrips.

2.    Get a Clothesline

No wonder that the old-fashioned lifestyle was much greener than the modern one. On average, a clothes dryer eats up to 6% of total household electricity use. Air dry your laundry as often as possible, especially during the summer months. Not only does line-drying save you money and help the planet, but sun-dried clothes actually smell fresher — just check that one for yourself!

3.    Smarten Up

Smart home appliances can monitor your use of power and water and help you use less when you are not at home. Alternatively, you can use a smart thermostat with an app to turn the heating off when you’re at work and turn it on before you come home. Installing motion sensors and smart switches can also help you save power by automatically turning lights off when you’re not in the room.
